Dear Shepherd Hart Spears,
You have absolutely captivated my soul. As surely as the clouds couldn’t separate themselves from the sky, as surely as the rings of age couldn’t separate themselves from a tree, my heart beats with your every breath. You have rounded out our family beautifully and reminded me to slow down and breathe in moments so fleeting and precious.
I know that I didn’t anticipate your birth in weekly blog posts and picture series, but be sure that you were eagerly awaited with every cell in my body.
I sure hope that the ability to view your birth slideshow stands the test of time, because if you see this as an adult, you will be certain of our love for you, a love that extended beyond birth and will carry on through life and death. We will not be perfect parents (ask your brother), but by the grace of God, we will try to surrender to whatever His perfect will for your life may be. We want you to know life to its fullest and to never hold you back from the greatness that is but a seed inside of you now, a seed that will take root in this world and weather many seasons for your good and the good of those finding relief in your shade.
Shepherd Hart, be a shepherd in this world. Protect the innocent, the lost, the stupid, the gentle… Be patient. Have a voice that is known for its leadership and its authority, yet also its love and its ability to know an individual as an individual. Be a strong shepherd, be a brave shepherd. Whatever and whomever your sheep may be, model yourself after The Shepherd. Know his sacrificial love for you; embrace it and be inspired.
