The man driving behind me.

While applying a color at work on Friday, an older gentleman walked up behind me and asked me in a rather serious tone, “Suzanna, can I speak with you for a minute?”

Me, “Yeah?”

He paused.

I wondered.

He paused some more.

Uhhh… Does he need to speak to me in private?  Like, do I need to step away for a sec?

I felt nervous.

He continued, “I wanted you to know that I was behind you when you were driving in today.”

Oh crap.

He paused.

More nerves.

I know that I was definitely singing.  Anything could have happened.  What did I DO?

He continued, “I just wanted to tell you that you

( – and this part felt like it took an eternity to come out – and I think I was holding my breath – and not just because of the chemical fumes -)

“…that you are one of the better drivers around here.”

What?!  AWESOME!

Him, “At every turn you used your signal.”

Me, “I know!  I feel very strongly about the blinker!”

He and I went back and forth as I was utterly beaming from ear to ear.  Sure didn’t see that one coming!  Wow!  Go ahead and surprise someone today with an unexpected compliment.  It feels delightful.  And do try and pause for dramatic effect.  The suspense is key.

Your driving: Excellent. Him taking time to compliment: Stellar! As they say, ‘One good turn deserves another.’
